On the galaxy's eastern fringe the Imperium meets a young and rising alien power for the first time in open war. Alarmed by a fast-spreading civilisation that preaches unity under a "Greater Good", it launches a crusade to stamp the newcomers out, and is fought to a costly standstill. The campaign ends not in conquest but in an uneasy truce, and the wider galaxy learns that a confident new player has arrived.
